The Lost Art of Workplace Engagement

by | Feb 21, 2023 | Blog

It’s not always the case, but I consider one of the most important responsibilities of HR is to ensure that their employees are engaged and motivated in their work. Employee engagement is important because it leads to higher levels of productivity, satisfaction, and retention within the organization.

What is the cost of low employee engagement?

Gallup’s Employee Engagement Survey states that 35-36% of the workforce is currently engaged in their jobs leaving 65% to be moderately or actively disengaged.

When employees are disengaged in their work, it can lead to a number of problems for the organization. These can include lower levels of productivity and efficiency, higher levels of absenteeism and turnover, and a decrease in overall morale and satisfaction within the workplace.

Additionally, disengaged employees are less likely to be invested in the success of the company and may be less motivated to contribute their full effort and capabilities. This can lead to a lack of innovation and creativity, as well as a decrease in the quality of the work produced by the organization.

Overall, a lack of employee engagement can have negative effects on both the individual employees and the organization as a whole. It is important for employers to prioritize employee engagement in order to foster a positive and productive work environment.

Why do employees disengage?

There are a number of reasons why employees may become disengaged from their work and feel less motivated. One common reason is a lack of recognition and rewards for their efforts. When employees do not feel valued and appreciated by their employer, they may become less motivated to put in their full effort.

Another reason for disengagement is a lack of opportunities for growth and development. When employees do not feel like they are learning and growing in their roles, they may become bored and uninterested in their work.

Additionally, a poor work environment or culture can also lead to disengagement. This can include factors such as a lack of support and collaboration from colleagues, as well as a lack of clear communication and direction from management.

Overall, when employees feel unvalued, unchallenged, and unsupported in their work, they are more likely to become disengaged and unmotivated. It is important for employers to address these issues in order to foster a positive and productive work environment.

Strategies for Improving Engagement

There are a number of strategies that you can use to increase employee engagement. One approach is to focus on improving communication within the organization. This can include regular check-ins with employees, transparent communication about company goals and strategies, and providing opportunities for employees to provide feedback and input.

Another important strategy is to offer meaningful recognition and rewards for outstanding performance. This can help to motivate employees and show them that their efforts are valued by the organization. This recognition and reward program should be based on a variety of values and motivators.

Additionally, providing opportunities for professional development and growth can be a powerful way to increase employee engagement. This can include providing training and development opportunities, as well as offering opportunities for employees to take on new challenges and responsibilities within the organization.

Overall, as an HR manager, it is important to prioritize employee engagement in order to foster a positive and productive work environment. By implementing effective communication, recognition, and development strategies, you can help to increase employee engagement and drive success within your organization.

Using DISC Profiles to increase engagement

The DISC assessment is a full spectrum tool that can help employees remain motivated and engaged. This assessment can help identify the best motivators for individuals with different personality types; those who are decisive, interactive, stable, and cautious. By using DISC assessments regularly, HR professionals and managers can gain insight into what motivates their employees to stay engaged.

Understanding employees’ motivations can also help managers tailor their communication and explanations, as well as better understand how much effort employees will put into tasks based on the rewards at stake.
